Teaching- EDI principles

An EDI self-assessment checklist for use in all teaching in all settings.

Regularly reviewing and updating this checklist will support ongoing commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity within medical education teaching sessions.

Cognitive Diversity:

  • Do you promote cognitive diversity by encouraging a mix of different intellectual styles, methods, or approaches to information processing? Consider specific guidance for dyslexia or other needs.

Celebrating Diversity:

  • Do you actively celebrate diversity in your teaching? Examples could include: cultural competence in communication skills, religious preferences in clinical decision-making session or exploration of how clinical signs/symptoms may appear differently in those of different ethnicities or gender.

  • Have you considered the use of inclusive language and terminology in your teaching materials?

  • Have you ensured that images and visual representations used in teaching are diverse and inclusive?

Reasonable Adjustments:

  • Are you able to gather prior information on attendees' needs and provide reasonable adjustments accordingly? Consider contacting the TPD for trainees or medical school for students.

  • Have attendees been informed of essential information, such as accessibility and potentially sensitive content, prior to the teaching session?

  • Does the timing and location of the teaching session ensure physical and cultural inclusivity? Consider referring to this diversity calendar. Is remote attendance an option?

Data Collection and Feedback:

  • Do you have a feedback process in place to review and address any EDI concerns raised by students or participants? See page on feedback.

Training and Development:

Would you like more training in this area? You could consider:
