Teaching in Clinical Environments

An EDI self-assessment tool for teaching in our clinical environments.

 

When conducting bedside teaching with patients, it is essential to have our EDI values at the forefront of our minds. It can be an anxiety invoking experience for both patients and students so we must endeavour to cultivate a supportive and inclusive environment where both patients and students feel respected and valued.

Preparation:

  1. Consider any cultural, religious, or language factors that may impact communication between students and patients.

  2. Ensure the patient knows what to expect, explore their personal preferences and ensure they are comfortable.

  3. Ensure the student knows what to expect, acknowledge any potentially sensitive areas of the history or examination and discuss how to approach these whilst maintaining patient privacy and dignity.

Environment:

  • Consider the accessibility of the environment eg space for those with limited mobility, noise and light levels for those with hearing impairment or those who are neurodivergent.

Clinical Scenarios:

  1. Are the clinical scenarios and case studies presented diverse and reflective of real-world patient populations?

  2. Have you incorporated discussions on cultural competence and diversity into clinical teaching sessions?
