Written and Verbal Assessments

An EDI self-assessment tool for Written and Verbal Assessments

By adhering to this checklist, assessment processes can be conducted in a manner that promotes fair and objective evaluation of candidates' competencies.

Preparation:

  1. Provide clear instructions and expectations for assessments, including any accommodations available for individuals with disabilities or additional needs.

  2. Ensure assessment formats are accessible to all candidates, considering different learning styles and abilities. Consider alternatives such as round table discussions, presentations or adaptations eg providing questions for preparation ahead of interviews.

  3. Ensure assessors reflect diversity and require assessors to evidence EDI mandatory training is up to date.

Delivery:

  1. Create a clear scoring matrix aligned with the competencies being assessed, ensuring transparency and consistency in evaluation.

  2. Provide candidates with background guidance for online interviews, such as a blurred or standard-issue background to prevent unconscious bias based on settings or surroundings.

  3. Avoid discussing personal thoughts or ranking candidates throughout the assessment process to maintain objectivity and fairness.

Feedback and Evaluation:

  1. Focus on the content rather than the writing or speaking style during assessment to mitigate biases related to writing proficiency or language fluency.

  2. Provide constructive and supportive feedback to candidates, focusing on areas for improvement rather than personal characteristics or identities.

  3. Regularly review assessment processes and outcomes to identify and address any potential biases or disparities in performance.

  4. Provide opportunities for candidates to ask questions and address any concerns about the interview process or assessment criteria.

Bias Interrupters

Consider using a bias interrupter toolkit or assigning someone as a "bias interrupter" with a specific responsibility to identify and challenge biases during assessments or interviews.
