Getting to our hospital

Transportation at RIE

The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is located on the Little France site to the East of the city on one of the main arterial roads. It is connected to the city and airport by good bus routes and cycle paths. Car parking is available for staff but is limited.

Car

  • Only staff with a permit can park on the campus site between 6:30am and 11:30am each weekday. Please see the forms below and for further information please refer to the Intranet.

  • Currently, Foundation Resident Doctors can’t apply for a permit, due to the temporary nature of their postings. Departments have Operational Permits for Foundation Resident Doctors. These are managed by Department Managers. Please speak to your ward/department directly in this regard.

  • All staff have access to Car Park 2C from 11:30am each weekday and can park their vehicles if spaces are available.

  • Staff are not permitted to park in other car parks across the campus, which are required for both patients and visitors. If spaces are not available within Car Park 2C, alternative parking such as the Park and Ride must be used. We encourage staff not to park in the roads surrounding the hospital as this can cause significant problems for the flow of traffic in these areas and also makes it very difficult for the people who live there.

  • Departments should continue to notify the parking team of any staff who require carpark access in an emergency, or because they are travelling to the site for an urgent service requirement.

  • Staff working nights or at the weekends can park on site regardless of whether they have a parking permit or not.

Park and Ride

  • Hermiston West

  • Newcraighall East

  • Ferrytoll North

  • Sheriffhall South

  • Straiton South

The main cycle focus is the cycle hub situated to the rear of the Chancellors Building. Please ensure you utilise an adequate high-quality lock when securing your bike.

Access codes to the blue bike cages are available from the NCP desk in the main mall beside M&S, show your ID and you will be given a code for the storage unit.

e-Bikes

If you have an e-Bike, the new e-Bike shelter beside Car Park 1G and the Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Health entrance to the building is now available for use. Codes are also available from the NCP desk in the main mall.

Health and Safety Guidance

e-Bikes Battery Charging

A policy is currently being developed concerning the safe charging of all Electric Vehicles, including e-bikes. In the interim, please observe the following recommended good practice for e-bike charging. NHS Lothian Owned e-Bikes

  1. Annual PAT testing of battery chargers.

  2. E-bikes, batteries and chargers should be serviced and maintained as per manufacturers guidelines.

  3. If possible, batteries should be charged in a fire hazard room complete with automatic smoke detection or a fire-resistant cabinet.

  4. It is recommended that batteries and chargers are placed on a fire-retardant surface if possible, such as a metal surface or a solid timber desk or worktop, which are free from surrounding combustible materials.

  5. Batteries must not be charged on the floor or under desks.

  6. Batteries must not be charged overnight in unoccupied premises.

  7. Consider two batteries for each e-bike in order that one battery can be charged during the day when the premises are occupied and can be switched of when charging is complete.

e-Bikes Owned by Individuals

In addition, staff should be aware of the well-publicised risk that some batteries may not be safe or compatible with the charging unit. This represents an additional fire hazard. Because of this risk, individual staff members should not charge electric bike batteries for their personally owned bikes in NHS Lothian premises. Advice for the general public is available here: e-bikes and e-scooters fire safety guidance - NFCC.

Dr Bike

The campus regularly has Dr Bike sessions which cater for cyclists. Dr Bike is a fully qualified bike mechanic from The Bike Station, who helps fix minor bicycle problems and provide maintenance advice.

The Dr Bike mechanic will provide:

  • a free bike safety inspection.

  • fixing of minor problems on the spot (e.g. punctures, brakes, gear problems).

  • a bike ‘MOT’ certificate to take to a bike shop for problems which cannot be fixed on the spot.

Dr Bike Sessions are completely free to staff on production of a staff ID.
