Appraisal
The RoT appraisal section is a great opportunity for you to showcase your achievements. Here are some helpful resources for both you and your appraiser, designed to ensure all relevant evidence is easily accessible and to make the most of your appraisal discussion.

We understand that the guidance for appraisal as a GMC Recognised Trainer can seem challenging, so we’ve created this helpful set of resources to support you. We’d love to hear from you if there are any additional courses or resources that would be valuable for us to highlight.
From a Postgraduate perspective the roles requiring GMC Recognition of Trainer (RoT) are named Clinical Supervisor (CS) and named Educational Supervisor (ES). After initial recognition it is expected that you will maintain and develop your skills as a Trainer. Evidence can be built up over your 5 yearly revalidation cycle. At the end of each 5 year cycle, it is expected that you will have evidenced development in each of the relevant domains in the table below.
Framework area | Evidence (examples) |
1. Ensuring safe and effective care through training | MIAD course; Clinical Educator Programme (CEP) course: "Teaching in clinical environments"; M&M meetings |
2. Establish and effective learning environment | MIAD course; CEP course: "Planning and evaluating teaching"; Departmental trainer meetings |
3. Teaching and facilitating learning | MIAD course; CEP course: "Interactive teaching and learning"; Teaching evaluations |
4. Promoting learning through assessment | MIAD course; CEP course: "Assessment in medical education"; Activities as an examiner |
5. Supporting and monitoring progress (ES only) | MIAD course; CEP course: "Giving effective feedback"; ARCP panel or STC member |
6. Guiding personal and professional development (ES only) | MIAD course; CEP course: "Equity, Diversity and Inclusion"; Trainee feedback |
7. Own personal and professional development as an educator | MIAD course; CEP: Teaching observation and feedback; PDP for next year |
The linked pages give a more in depth view of each domain and plenty more examples of evidence. Much of this will already be part of your clinical appraisal. There are large areas of overlap in the evidence for each domain; your appraiser will be looking for a variety of evidence showing engagement as you reflect on and address your learning needs and development.
Please note attendance at a MIAD course with appropriate reflection will give evidence across every domain.
