Research, Audit, Teaching and Management Opportunities
The job plan is divided into 3 parts: Out of Hours, Clinical activity and Personal and Professional Development (PPD). Three PAs (average 12 hours per week) are allocated for this.
PPD will take the form of some or all of these components:
Clinical teaching skills development through the CEP (Clinical Educator Programme)
Management and Leadership skills development through the Lothian Leadership Academy
Research and Quality Improvement skills development and activity linked to Safety and Quality improvement in Lothian.
Medical Informatics development linked to current e-health strategies.

Teaching:
Undergraduate
4th, 5th and 6th Year Medical students – MEF module links for individual modules. Working closely with module leads to deliver weekly tutorials and bedside teaching events.
Clinical Skills – Immediate Life Support, clinical skills tutorials, acute care simulation
Student Assistantship – Referrals/handover, Prescribing, Acute Care, Simulation Ward Round, Tactical Decision Making
Clinical Environment Induction – a week of teaching aimed at preparing Y4 students (who have completed their pre-clinical years) for the clinical environment.

Foundation Induction – Referrals/handover and procedural skills workshops.
Lessons Learned – Lunchtime teaching sessions around patient safety analysing adverse events using the NPSA contributory factors framework.
Foundation Simulation – High fidelity simulation programme for FY1 and FY2 exploring acute clinical and communication scenarios.
Foundation Lunchtime Teaching – Lunchtime teaching, bleep free, covering a variety of topics related to foundation curriculum
NHS Lothian Mastery Programme - Simulation training on high-risk procedural skills

Programme Development:
LearnPro modules – Design & development of modules used for clinical induction across the South East of Scotland.

NHS Lothian Mastery Programme – Design, development and implementation of high-risk procedural skills training programme across NHS Lothian.

How we support you:
Quality Improvement training is delivered by the NHS Lothian Quality Faculty.
Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Teaching: We fund the Medical Education Fellows to attend ESSCE (held in August) where they’ll get a session on the majority of the relevant assessment topics including a chance to write and critique MCQs and writing and running an OSCE station.
Research Methodology is supported through several routes: Undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, by attending CRM (CME Research Meetings on alternate Thurs at 1230) and the WTCRF courses on qualitative research and stats.
