Learning & Teaching

Oncology is a specialist post with many opportunities to learn from the clinicians you are working with both clinically and in regular educational meetings -

  • Weekly Junior Doctor teaching sessions on Thursday at 1pm on the different cancer groups, anti-cancer treatments and symptom management tutorials from the Palliative Care team

  • Registrar Journal Club – every Tuesday 1-2pm – if you are free, this is an opportunity to hear about newly released research in oncology, or other peer-led teaching

  • Audit Meetings – advertised in the department approximately every 8 weeks

  • Multidisciplinary Meetings - these take place on weekly schedule and juniors are welcome to attend

Audit and Research

There are many opportunities for quality improvement in the department – recent years' work has included redesigning the admissions triage system; improving awareness and use of Key Information Summaries; and creating local guidance on managing anaemia in our patients.

Many of the consultant and Speciality Training staff are heavily involved in clinical research, and assistance with projects is always appreciated and acknowledged in publications.

Teaching opportunities

There are regular 5th year Edinburgh University medical students cycling through department. They will spend time between tutorials and clinics attached to the wards, so there will be many opportunities for impromptu clinical teaching, as well as more formal involvement delivering bedside teaching and tutorials.
