There are a range of medical grades on the ward doctor rota including Foundation Doctors, GP and Internal Medicine Trainees, plus Ward based Clinical Fellows.

FY1 – Inpatient wards (usually ward 3 or 11). Out of hour shifts are done in the Medical Assessment Unit.

FY2/IMT/GPSTs - Your time will be split between inpatient wards, the cancer assessment centre and out of hours shifts including nights as part of the Hospital at Night team covering both oncology and haematology inpatients.

Inpatient work is ward based. Each ward will have a mixture of inpatients across the different tumour sites (lung, breast, gynae, CNS, head and neck, upper and lower GI, GU etc).

The speciality registrars are either trainees in clinical or medical oncology, and rotate between teams every 4 months. Their time is split between ward and outpatients.

Consultant ward rounds happen on a regular schedule which is displayed on the wards and available in the departmental shared drive. On days without regularly scheduled rounds, ward doctors should see all their patients and alert senior staff to any new or unwell patients to be reviewed. There are inpatient advanced nurse practitioners working in the department who rotate through the inpatient oncology wards and CAU.

The ward based Clinical Fellow posts (post FY2) also spend 10 weeks attached to the Hospital Palliative Care Team.
